Stick with the sonotube, if it will fit in your vehicle. I used to haul around a 17.5" f/4.5 and an 8" f/8, both in sonotubes. Once you work out a system, it really isn't a big deal. I used a small trailer for the 17.5". Also, sonotubes make wonderful scope tubes as they have good thermal properties and are solid. My friend who makes tubes from Sonoco tubes first covers them in soft vinyl for good looks, waterproofing, and ease of care, then uses wooden end-rings to keep them round and pretty. It would be easier to make well than a truss, in my opinion, and probably work better.
