Re: [ATM] Thin Blanks.. Slumping??
What I have found ..
The kiln work proved to be the least of the problems. I contacted the
local community college. They have a craft studio for various classes
taught there. I spoke to the glass instructor about the project and she
was very interested. I brought her several projects to fire and slump and
she has done them all, as well as argued with me on techniques and
problems. The only caveat is the firing has to be done when she can work
it in. Sometimes this translates to weeks of waiting.
Recently I found an ATM in Corvallis that has a kiln who has expressed an
interest in firing my molds for me. Lastly, I advertised on this list and
had several responses to fire and slump.
ATM's are helpful and curious.
The molds were another issue. I have one done out of furnace cement.
Hard is not the word for it. Clay slip makes a good mold, as does hard
plaster, what ever that is. A project for this winter is to fire various
mold materials and see how they do. The mold should be as close to the
curve you want as you can make it. I usually grind the mold before and
after firing or at least before slumping the glass on it. Those little
odd spots on the 15.5 mirror, (see the pics in the upload area under
vorblesnak), are due to a poor mold, and though they are very shallow,
they are tedious to grind out.
I am starting to bring together the files I have to put up a web page.
That is another project for this winter.
