The way you learn to use your hands is to actually make the
mistakes with your hands and learn from those mistakes!
As to annealing glass from a slumping operation, annealing is
done as the temp is coming down from the slumping temp and there
is a range of temp that you have to go slowly through to allow
the glass to assume the unstressed state.
You can get glass up to an inch thick from any
commercial/industrial glass shop and 3/4" is good for a nice 10"
scope.  Right now, I've got a guy that is doing a 3/4" thick
mirror that is 14" in diameter and another that is piddleing
along on a 17" diameter mirror.  Basically, you don't need a 2"
or more thick piece of glass.
