[ATM] How Big is Too Big?

Jay,
Your comments are right on target and your experience with the flex
rocker should be helpful to other ATMers. My latest 12" f/5.3 telescope
also uses the flex rocker design with a 22" diam ground ring. I had
trouble with visuallization until I constructed a wooden model and
modified the parts until it all came out right. It has 16" diam altitude
bearings attached directly to a Kriege & Berry mirror cell with no
mirror box. Dust protection for the mirror is provided by a round
plexiglas cover attached to the mirror edge with velcro. The altitude
bearings rest on 4 teflon pads on the flex rocker, centered over the rim
of the ground ring. The altitude bearings extend 2 inches below the
surface of the flex rocker to provide side thrust and keep them centered
on the teflon pads.
The upper cage is triangular, like Mel Bartel's, with wire spider; it's
a great light weight design and is sure to be widely copied.
