I used a wide variable speed type belt drive for the speed reducer on my
grinder, there is substantial loss from the belts, I sometimes have to
lift the motor to let it start first and then let it down to grab the

But aside from some starting problems there seems to be plenty of power
once its going. The motor was a surplus deal at Princess Auto , 1/2 hp
1750 rpm. Geared down to 50 rpm, there is enough torque to do a 20"
with ease.
