Re: [ATM] how much hp for a waineo...

Hi Steve,
Several years ago I used a 1/3 HP AC motor to build a
grinding table with a 24" turntable and overarm. I
followed in many others' footsteps (in particular Dave
Lilly). To get the reduced speed (1750 rpm down to
<100 rpm) you will need to incorporate a gear or
step-down pulley system. I made my own 18" pulley's (2
of them) and used flanged bearings, steel shafts and
huge belts to connect the pulleys. In the end I had a
3-step pulley directly attached to the motor
(1"/2"/3") and had 3 output speeds available by moving
the position of the first belt. I used my last pulley
in the system to drive a fourth pulley that drove the
overarm eccentrically. It worked well. It would
occassionaly stall during fine grinding & polishing a
13" mirror. With the geared down 1/3 HP motor, you
better have the off switch easy to reach. That thing
will take your arm clean off. That said, there were
times I wished I had a full HP. I've trepanned a
couple of 13" blanks with this setup (overarm held
stationary to hold the tool against the uncut glass).
The system works well for hogging and polishing. Alas,
my first polished effort was destroyed by a jogging
stroller now in disrepute. In the midst of the second
grinding effort, my patience waned and I purchased a
finished mirror. My grinding table is now idle until I
can find time to go back to pushing glass, which I
will some day when all my kids have grown up and moved
away! Playing Scoutmaster and AYSO ref consume all my
Saturdays and evenings it seems.
I once had the entire project (descriptions and pics)
on a website, but it was taken down after a move. I am
considering reposting it, along with some other
projects I've finished recently (a 16" tri-dob, copy
scopes, etc.). If there's sufficient interest, I could
repost it....time allowing! It was a really fun
project and extremely rewarding to watch in action! I
highly recommend the exercise, if you have room for
the finished product--it's a beast!

Dave
BTW, I salvaged nearly every part from the trash,
including the motor. It was a VERY cheap project--even
the glass was free. ...and so in the atm archives
you'll see posts on that topic under the alias
'Dumpster Dave'. Yours truly.
