Keep everything covered as much as possible (lap, tools, mirror, etc.) when
not in use. Let any water you use sit around for a while, or use bottled (I
have quite a bit of rust in my tap water). When you apply cerox mixture to
the glass, run your (impeccably clean) fingers through it to make sure there
are no clumps. Wear clean clothes, and a short sleeve shirt. Wash your hands
often. Be mindful to use cleanthing to wipe the mirror off.

The fact that you only got a couple of scratches means it was likely either a
clump of polishing agent that broke up almost immediately when you began to
polish, or something you wiped the mirror with after wards. If the lap or
polishing compound itself were contaminated, there would be many many
scratches. Look at the position and length of the scratches and try to guess
what you did that might have dragged along some material to produce it.

Finally, rejoice in the fact that you had only 3 hours of polishing in. The
most agonizing thing is to be the in last session of figuring, after many
many hours of work!

Clear skies.
