Well known procedure of the cold and warm pressing of the pitch lap is
always recommended to last very long compared to time of single stroke in
polishing.
That means that pitch will respond to slowly to be considered
softer if deeper channels allow for sidewise but slow flow which plays a
role in
pressing.
On base of this intuitive "reasoning" I do not think that depth of channels
can do what you expect. But I may be wrong.
