I thought we were talking about a normal pitch lap, but apparently
it's got beeswax on it.
I thought the goal was to make the lap act harder at the edge, and
softer in the center.
For a pure pitch lap that is fairly thick (1/4" - 3/8"), cutting
deeper channels makes the pitch act softer. Shallower channels make
it act harder. So, cut deeper channels in the pitch in the center of
the lap to make it act softer there, and shallow channels at the edge
to make it act harder.
I have done this to change the hardness of an ENTIRE lap, but I have
never varied the channel depth as a function of radius.
