Ken -- If that piece is of optical quality and not intended for a 
substrate you have a very valuable piece of glass.  I would think 
seriously about slumping it for two reasons. 1)It already has a 
thickness to diameter ratio of 1:10 which is ideal for several reasons, 
mechanical and optical.  2)I don't think that much care needs be taken 
in annealing it after slumping, unlike ordinary optical glass.  Perhaps 
someone on the list with a glass oven  could do it or failing that, 
United Lens or Newport could do it fairly cheaply.  That is if the oven 
will get hot enough.
You mentioned aluminizing a spot on the rear of the lens as in the 
Gregory- Maksutov style.  Don't do it.  It saves making a surface but 
constrains the design parameters and severely limits the size of the 
usable field.
