It need not be... I made mine with two small glass disks cut from a
piece of plate glass and a metal pipe fitted to a drill press. The
two pieces were ground as we usually do for mirrors. In a few minutes,
the concave side had the appropriate curvature, telling me that the
other side must have a corresponding convex curve. You can also use
bottoms of beer bottles (I presume you have ample access to that)...
