I use pipe fittings in my GEM mount (as described by Howard). Pipe threads
are tapered so they should not get sloppy. However, as a machinist friend
once told me, pipe threads are refered to by machinists as drunken threads.
They tend to wander.
Since the threads are tapered they tend to provide their own variable
friction.
