FWIW, I had a diagonal mirror that had an enhanced coating on it from Edmund and 5 years worth of neglect as well, but a half hour in concentrated (37%) hydrochloric acid took it all off. Guess patience and time didn't hurt as ingredients either. The mirror was recoated and works great.
