I'd probably avoid the equatorial mount just for simplicity and stability.  I'm 
not in any way saying the the equatorial mount isn't a good mount (in fact your 
design sounds well thought out), but I'll never forget how happy my friend was 
when he looked through my 10" dob for the first time.

See, he owns a 4.5" scope on an equatorial mount, and to him, the rock solid dob
mount was amazing.  I just pulled up a chair and watched him play.
