A "stain" in the glass would not be visible through the coating.  An etched 
surface would be visible, but I don't believe this to be the case.

After speaking with the owner of the mirror I believe that the mirror was 
stripped as quickly as possible, and when the coating did not come off 
completely, one or two attempts were made at rubbing it off with a cottonball. 
After failing that, the mirror was coated right over the scratched left over 
coating, producing a coating which was not satisfactory...


This is just my opinion based on descriptions from the owner of the mirror, but 
I have not seen the mirror, so I can't say if I am correct.
