If the Hubble scope is pointed anywhere near the sun it has an aperture
cover that automatically closes. This cover cannot be controlled
remotely (ground control) to hold it open so it is impossible to point
it toward the sun and "fry" the optics. I don't remember how many
degrees the scope needs to be pointed before aperture closure occurs but
it is far and this
has prevented the astronomers from observing somethings they want to
look at.

Yesterday on the front page of the local paper was a big story about the
alleged "coverup" of the Hale-Bopp "companion" by the secretive and evil
NASA conspiracy, who refused to point Hubble towards the Sun and fry the
optics. This Astronomy Magazine Mismanagement thread is in the same
vein.
