Well, there was (if I correctly remember the name) Jeff Schroeder,
who built a monster refractor (11"?) and transported it with one end
of the tube in a cradle on top of his subcompact hatchback, and the
other end supported on a pier attached to a small trailer.  His
setup was featured in S&T sometime around, I'd guess, late '80 or early
'81.  I don't remember whether the trailer was used for observing as
well as transportation.
