Yet another use for the cast iron weights:
I used 2 small 1.5# weights as a longitudinal counterweight for a heavy finder
scope. I found that 3/4" copper sleeve tube joints used for home gas plumbing
fit perfectly in the center of these China dumbbell weights. In fact, the
copper sleeves can stack up if you want. Then, with an eye bolt up through the
middle to a fender washer that spans the copper tube and wing nut to hold it
snug, you have an inexpensive (<$3) counterweight assembly.
Chin and eyes up!
