ATM Diffraction limited newt mirrors
In looking for a 16" mirror I could buy I found that one commercial
telescope company had a finished 16"
scope for less than what I could buy just the mirror for. There was
little info on the mirror used other than
it was "diffraction limited." I inquired about the specs on their
mirrors to their technical support people was
told "diffraction limited" indicates "the scope is at least 1/4 wave at
the wavefront."
Futhermore they said that "it is very difficult to see ANY improvement
beyond 1/4 wave at the eyepiece
and if the mirror is below this standard, it will be noticeable." They
told me this is why "diffraction limited"
has become the standard and that "essentially, you cannot have
diffraction limited optics without achieving
at least 1/8 wave on the mirror surface."
Just wondering.... does anyone see any problem with this explanation?
Does this sound accurate?
