ATM C8 Stepper Drive/ Opto Star-tracker

I never saw any replies to the previous question whether stepper
motors can be adapted to the old spur-gear C8's.  Is the poor
consistancy of tracking (for CCD imaging purposes) due to the
spur gears in the base or in the AC motors themselves?

Also, has anyone had success making a startracker for a scope using
a finder of some sort (or maybe off axis guider) and photodiodes,
amplifiers, and control circuitry?  I know CCD's can do it but I 
would think photodiodes could too, at a must more affordable cost
and less complex design.
