RE: ATM mercury flats



If you think of the earth's gravity as essentially acting at a point at
the center (a reasonable approximation, I think), then the mercury 
surface will have a radius of ~3500 miles.  The sag over 10 inches, say,
is < 1/300 of a wave (assuming my quick math is OK).
