It has been a while since I had to design something with batteries in it, but I'm 99% sure the answer is they give off no gases during normal operation, and will give off a small amount of hydrogen if they are overcharged. I seem to recall the amount being something around 5 cc of H2 from a C cell under continuous overcharge.

As a side note, this was for a radio to be used on space station Fred, and NASA was very concerned about outgassing. Our safety engineer said that the astronauts were a bigger safety problem because humans will emit about a liter of methane per day.
