One way of making sure is to say something like "Hey you there! 
(pointing at your mirror image with your right arm) Raise your right 
arm and point at me!" If your mirror image raises one arm to point back 
at you, you know it is his right arm - unless of course he is cheating 
(always a possibility)

The latter is what I thought first, but noting that both I and my 
mirror image face the same direction, namely in the direction of the 
mirror frame, I had to reject the idea.

The former, however, is not necessarily incorrect.
