My suspicions are that it is Canada Balsam that was used for the
original adhesive.
Can't remember the solvent for it at the moment but somebody else
can pop up and tell what is the best.  If so, just put a little
wash on the prism or the plate and put them together again.
If I used superglue to put them together again, I'd use the stuff
that they put rear view mirrors for cars back on again as that
type is thicker and will flex with the temp changes.
