Here's the general rule of grinding and polishing.
Put the pressure and motion where the glass needs to be removed.
All else falls from that!
The "standard" method is with the mirror on top of the tool and
as you move the mirror back and forth, the weight of the mirror
applies pressure to the center of the mirror and the edge of the
tool to make a concave mirror, etc.  You can do this "upside
down" by applying pressure on the tool to the center of the
mirror.  It works!
Subdiameter tools only mean that you can have a better control of
the application of pressure on the upturned mirror surface where
you want it to be and remove the glass in that area.
