Quite - that's why most of the theory of optical magnification detection theory
is based on experimental data (of which there's quite a bit - it's interesting
for air forces to know the contrast threshold at which a pilot can perceive
contrast details for different apparent angular sizes and contrast ratios
between object plus background and object).

But as I said, that would lead us even further astray.
