Fare enough, this is true to my knowledge and log files. If by
now I have experienced no effects of any kind, I reckon I can
go to my grave not caring.

Simple misunderstanding on some other points. Some of us are
not using browsers, so my question related to FTP-like downloads
without browsers. I wished to point out the benefit of this
since it already exists on many server installations (like
mine for many years). There are a lot of files to be shared,
but how much they are actually shared would presumably depend
on ease of accessibility. If there is no efficient way to do
this and limited interest, so be it. Question seems to be
answered, I'm happy.
