Re: [ATM] [Atmadmin] no luck with FTP

Hi again,

So back to my original question, I am wondering how we should
download large numbers of files, as in the present case where
there are a lot of Oslo len files?

FTP conveniently allows people to download large numbers of files
very easily. I know (and respect that) the ATM list leadership
must have reasons to have removed FTP (although I do not agree
with this choice), but I think it is unfortunate if we have been
left with no alternative for 12 years. I feel that actively
removing FTP downloads with no replacement was a step backwards,
and see no gain in having done this. During these same 12 years,
I have just left everything on my servers alone and everything
has worked fine. Regarding securuty, there has not been a single
breakin, or even a single attempt, although the IT department
routinely claimed this was a problem and that there were attempts
(this was repeatedly disproved in every single case). SPAM has
been a big headache, but so far that has never affected FTP
downloads. Uploads to servers obviously need to be controlled.

Dominic
