Re: [ATM] heat

both times i've made a pitch lap i soked the tool and mirror in hot
water...bringing them up to temp relatively slowly so as not to cause any
shock to the glass...then once in hot water i brought a wok full of hot
water to a near boil and added it to the mix to bring the temp up more as
the pitch was about ready to pour...let that sit for a couple of minutes and
only remove the tool from the hot soup when you are ready to pour...a quick
dry with a towel...and good to go...then yank the mirror out of the bath
only when the pitch was cool enough to work the shape into the lap....of
course most of yall know more about this than i do, but i had no trouble
both times working the shape into the warm lap with the mirror and some
soapy CerOx...I find the fussy part to be the channeling...pitch is soooo
fickle when its cool

I played with the idea of sticking it in the oven...(my first lap for an 8"
f/7)...when trying to refashion it after some polishing that wasn't going so
well...the only problem i ran into was that i found i needed to tape the
edge somehow so the pitch wouldn't "slump" off the tool.
