Maybe you could use a beanbag-like bed. It would support as does the sand
idea but if it escaped it wouldn't scratch.
My wife has a small beanbag pillow originally designed for neck support
on long
road trips. The bag itself is made of a very stretchy material similar
to several
thicknesses of nylon stocking and then filled with very tiny styrofoam
beads.
The end effect is that the beanbag supports well and acts almost
liquid-like to
the touch.
For your application the bag-of-beads could be supported with a soft
sided box.
It could be just the thing you're looking for.
