Possibly the convex side is not a figure of revolution or it may have
irregularities. You can have a "nearly" perfect rigid support then, but
enough off to cause sag and print-through.
A way to compensate for small irregularities could be to have thin pads that
don't give a lot but just enough to let the support match the back surface.
The material could for example be chamois (the fabric kind, not the natural
leather).
