Re: [ATM] Is ATMing really disappearing?

A toofer reply....

I have all these Sky and Telescope magazines. Some of the more recent years
take up a couple of feet of bookshelf in my den. Older issues were in a
cabinet until I pulled them out about a year or so ago. They are in about 3
or 4 stacks about 1 foot high each in the den floor. The reason I pulled
them out is that space is getting tight and I was going to part with them.
But I wanted to pick out the ones that had good stuff in them and then I was
going to chuck the rest.

Well, The only reason I kept them in the first place was for the ATM stuff.
I started to look through them to make sure that some of the "of special
interest" issues didn't get thrown out. There is the Dec 75 issue that was
the inspiration for the grinding machine my brother and I built. There is
the Nov 69 issue that has a picture of a friend of mine (before I met him)
and his first place scope at Stellafane. There is .... well I could go on
and on. There are a zillion Buchroeder designs and scopes. You middle aged
guys remember the Dillworth 16" relay scope. It is the stuff Dan was talking
about. From the 60's and 70's. And the 80's are chocked full of good ATM
stuff too. Almost every issue has ATM stuff, great ATM stuff.

If I part with any it will be the new ones, from 1990 to present. I'm
keeping the rest.

I can't get em out of my floor. I start looking through them and can't stop.
I didn't look at them when they were in the cabinet. What is strange is how
well I remember articles from 30 years or more ago. Not one in the last 15
years or so sticks out in my mind. Heee Heeee!

Jerry,

My sentiments exactly. I've recently subscribed to
the Griffith Observer through the Astronomical League,
and will probably let my S&T subscription run out next
year. I was upset when they changed the logo on the
magazine and told them so. Now they don't even
deliver the magazine in a protective wrapper-it's no
longer about the amateur astronomer interest but the
profit. Anyway, remember when you could only
subscribe in January or July?

I believe Gary Seronik is the one in charge of ATM things

I had the same thoughts as you and did let my subscription lapse for
want of ATM material.

The magazine that interests me most from an ATM perspective is Ivan
Kratsev's ATM Letters Journal http://members.kabsi.at/i.krastev/atmlj/ -
it looks interesting, but I don't subscribe to it because the cost is
prohibitive. Perhaps someone who does subscribe would share their
experiences.

Clear skies.
