Re: [ATM] Polishing NaCl IR Filters
John Strong's "Procedures in Experimental Physics" describes polishing rock salt crystal prisms using rouge suspended in a saturated aqeous salt solution, on a pitch lap, with a chamois ready to receive the optic immediately on the last polishing stroke. To quote: "The work is rubbed against the lap until it is almost dry. It is then kept moist with the breath for the final strokes and is slipped off the tool onto the chamois to be dried." The accompanying figure shows a prism on a faceted pitch lap with a wood - felt - chamois disk next to it, with arrows showing how the prism is transfered to the chamois on the final stroke.
This is a magnificent book for all kinds of optical techniques, by the way, as well as other lab techniques from the old days.
