The anecdotes and opinions are interesting, but unscientific. 

First, I think the atm list provides an excellent cross-section of the 
population.  Not every ATM in the world may be a member, but I think 
that statistically the population is not (too) skewed.  I suggest we do 
a little survey of list members.  People would need tp give only a few 
information items:  Current age, Age when first entered ATMing, and 
Country of residence.  If the ATM demographics (current ages) match the 
country demographics, I would say that the ATM hobby is "stable".  If 
the ATM demographics show more young people (percentage-wise)  than the 
general population, the hobby is "growing" in popularity.

If someone would like to set up the survey, I could do the statistical 
analysis.  Anything else, I think, is hearsay.
