Re: [ATM] the future of amateur telescope making and amateur astronomy
Computer controlled figuring machines?
Basically I can see much more assistance from micro controllers and
computers in the current processes of measuring a mirror surface and
figuring it correctly.
Maybe interferometers will start to replace Foucault and Ronchi.
Maybe "Lucky Imaging" sensors and techniques will become available.
I don't see the size of most amateur scopes going beyond the current
sizes (8" to 20") because the hardware for managing such beasts hasn't
got significantly lighter or cheaper, although something may be possible
with adaptive optics to compensate for a lighter and less rigid mount.
Will we get the true auto align scope where it has a camera instead of a
finder? The scope takes an image of the sky, solves it to determine
where it is pointed, then does it somewhere else to get a good
alignment. Just put it down and turn it on.
