[ATM] Got Stiction?

Dobsonions will prevail. The idea of using flexural bearings is not new to
ATM world. In ATMbook two (original volumes) p373 "Springfield Mounting" by
RussellW. Porter, Figure 2 shows the flexure mounting of a worm.

Porter writes:"Figure 2 is a schematic representation of a clever and
highlypractical device for taking the backlash out of the main worm
andwheel. It is due, so far as I know, to Chapman, of Riverside,California.
Several amateurs in southern California have adopted theidea. It consists of
mounting the entire motor and worm unit on amembrane B, made from thin
flexible metal, such as spring bronze. Thepedestal E can be so adjusted on
the base casting as to flex themembrane sufficiently to assure ample
pressure of the worm againstthe wheel. The worm should be properly adjusted
to mesh with theteeth of the wheel, by making the screw holes in the
membraneslightly oversize. Really this membrane support for the main worm
isa godsend for removing all looseness and consequent backlash due towear,
and providing a constant pressure." Don Clement Running Springs,
California
