I'd first consider making a smaller mirror by yourself.  If you
have assistance from a local ATMer, you could do the mirror
without getting the experience of the smaller mirror.  A 8 or 10"
mirror will teach you many of the problems that you can run into
without the long time that the larger mirror will take to get
into and out of that problem.
