The only thing I can think of is that a large pit population will cause a
general reduction in contrast. Not by changing the diffraction pattern but
simply by scattering light throughout the field. The thing is, you'd have to
have a truly vast number of them before you could scatter enough light to be
generally noticeable. A single 0.1mm pit for every square mm of the surface
is still only 1% of the total surface area. The actual reduction in contrast
would be less.
