A good idea no doubt, even if a handy calculation was available, it would be 
nice to verify it.

However, DAQ's start around $75 and up, then there is the selection of a proper 
pressure / force sensor or load cell.  I'm not even certain where to start 
there.  One idea might be:

For a humbling experiance, get your hands on a copy of Wilson's Reflecting 
Telescope Optics II.  Stressed lap polishing is just the begining!
