One thing that I do is use a vacuum gauge to keep my foot still.
Put a vacuum gauge on your car and watch as the gauge moves about
as you drive down the road.  I've found that my gas milage is
about 21mpg if I keep the vacuum above 14", with about 16mpg
between 11" and 14" and about 11mpg below that.  This, of course,
is if the tranny is in high gear.
The other thing that the vacuum gauge helps with is keeping me
from sudden changes of the throttle position as this activates
the accelerator pump when the pedal goes down and that is just
wasted gas.  Slow changes of the vacuum are what you want to do.
