Re: [ATM] OT: increasing mpg

First, I am not suggesting that anyone modify his or her vehicle. I was only
saying what I did to improve my gas mileage. This was a combination of all
the factors I mentioned, driving and accelerating slower, choosing a tire
for low rolling resistance, and using an approved low viscosity motor oil.
As far as over inflating, I have not detected any wear or handling problems
so far. I have owned a great many vehicles over the years and do my own
repair work for the most part. I have even installed front Bilstein struts
on a Beemer used to commute many thousands of trips thru L.A. with.
(Richard) I also have owned and driven other great handling cars with lever
type shocks such as AH bugeyes. So I am acutely aware of what handling
should be and the effect of tire inflation on it. I live high up in the
mountains down here in South California and drive on ice and in snow for
several months of the year.

What really is scary are flatlanders from L.A., who rarely drive in wet
conditions, (no less ice and snow) driving up to the mountains and
endangering everyone with their ignorance about driving in extreme
conditions. BTW, I find that a narrower tire works better for me in snow
conditions as the narrower tire bites down through. It is funny to see those
people come up with fat tires that literally float on the snow with little
traction. YMMV

does, but it is an amazingly stupid thing to do. I am horrified that I have
to share the road with such people.
