To rough them up, use some #320 lightly on the
surface. This should work. Then clean it with
alcohol or acetone. For the coating that you do not
want to thicken, use a wide-tip permanent marker and
blacken them up. That should do it, and it's cheap
and ready to use in about 5 minutes.
