[ATM] Re: Perfect Telescope - was FAILURE, Warning...
Perhaps the nirvana of a telescope would be one that you would never dream
of trying to improve;-) Since that is out of reach....
For me, the "perfect telescope is one that is used. Therefore, if it is
intended to be portable, it should be compact, light, easily assembled and
hold collimination well after disassembly, transport and reassembly.
More importantly, a "perfect" telescope should be able to deliver whatever
the seeing allows. After a few years dabbling in this hobby, I'm amazed at
how frequently the "seeing" improves with well made optical tubes that have
been assembled paying attention to the little details, such as baffling and
removing stray light. Bryan Greer's and Alan Alder (sp?) articles on the
frontal boundary layer, which have been discussed frequently here, and last
but not least the accuracy of the optical components to focus the majority
of light into the airy disk.
In summary, how we assemble these components, while important in that we
wish our instruments to maintain collimation, are not as critical as
reducing the turbulence and scattered light that detracts from the final
image.
