Regarding ferric chloride solution circuit board etchant from Radio
Shack:

It will.  It just takes it a bit lomger.  Without an overcoat, you can
watch it desolve the aluminum.  I removed the coating/overcoating from a
6" mirror several years ago.  It didn't seem to be doing much, so I let
it sit for a while.  An hour later when I finally remembered it, the
mirror was clean.
