I second this. Strongly alkaline solutions attack glass. Try ferric
chloride solution available from Radio Shack and other electronics
suppliers as circuit board etchant. I don't know if it will go through
the various overcoats, but it will take off aluminum and will be much
less likely to harm glass. Safety wise, it shouldn't be too bad. Don't
drink it and you should be OK.
