Although this may be looking as an aesthetic design, S-shape has
another purpose, at least in the eyes of contemporary engineers of that
time.
It was supposed to provide greater mechanical strength for a given
weight of spokes by following direction of the force exerted on spokes.

Yes, and therefore we all like to have some of those things around as
decorations.
