Thanks chaps. Had a bottle of nearly used up FeCl so just tried
it and it worked fine. There's some surface blotchyness left
which won't come off easily and may even be micro pitting or
water stain/etching of the original glass under the old coating.
I'll get the microscope on it later. Eitherways, drop of the old
CeO2 should shift it. Nice to see my very first mirror again :
8.5" F5 made from 1-5/8" Pyrex!

On the subject of Cerium Dioxide, we discussed it here a while
back and there was talk of various purity grades and colours. If
you want the real 99.8% stuff look here :

Earl who runs Trent is a very helpful guy and they stock a lot
more than the CeO2, such as every grade of Silicon Carbide and
Emery Powder you've ever heard of, by the kilogram. And they're
in the UK for a change ;)
