Ferric chloride is sold by Radio Shack and other suppliers of electronic
components for etching circuit boards. It loves to eat aluminum. My
employer has an etching operation so I can get small samples of "used up"
ferric free. Even the used stuff strips mirrors very nicely. A fresh
solution should make that old coating disappear in a flash. It won't hurt
the glass or you, if you don't drink it. It will make rust colored stains
on almost anything organic (skin, cloth) so wear gloves and old clothes.
