Re: [ATM] RE: Silicone Failure
I do not see how RTV can fail assuming:-
a) The joint surfaces were clean.
b) The product was within its use by date (it does fail when old in the tube)
c) It was the correct type of Silicone for the two dissimilar materials.
Consider the stresses that form from the pressure of water in a 6ft x 2ft x
2ft aquarium just glued together with RTV and no other reinforcements.
Vastly higher than what our tiny mirrors are subjected to.
I've never had an aquarium joint fail. (Broken the glass from my stupidity)
One word of warning, I've had two tubes of silicone bathroom sealer (non
acetic acid) that never set.
When I phoned the company they knew it was a faulty batch and replaced it
but had never sent out any warnings.
My take would be if the joint peeled apart leaving one surface clean then
joint cleaning was the problem
If the joint split leaving adhesive on both surfaces then it was old stock
or incompletely cured or the wrong product.
