This is true ONLY IF the diameter to thickness ratio is greater than the
same ratio of the solid blank.  This turns out to be true in most cases,
since all of the molded blanks I have seen are deeper (thicker) than a
solid blank.  They tend to be more of the "classical" dimension of 6:1.

It would be more proper to say that it is stiffer per weight than a
similar solid blank.  

And yes, I are an engine-ear. If you want a good structural reference,
look at the ASCI (American Steel Construction Institute) Handbook.  All
of the geometrical and structural formulae you could want are there. 
The only difference between steel and glass is the strength!
